I had a simple revelation this morning while sitting outside reading my Word… basking in the presence of God. You see, we just moved out to the country. Or at least what I consider the country. And we have a pasture full of cows that backs up to our backyard. It is so relaxing to sit out on the porch and watch the cows hang out in the pond. Or watch the little baby calves chase each other around. And the birds are chirping all around making a beautiful symphony of sounds. The dog is laid out in the grass in puppy heaven because she has never had her own backyard. It’s just simply beautiful! And country living is beginning to grow on me.
But one thing I thought about this morning was all the mornings that I sat outside on the bench while I was locked up and I would watch the cows in the field across from the prison and I would yearn for their freedom! I would think about how great it would be to be a cow on the other side of my fence! But today, I’m realizing that those cows were never free. They were behind their own fence. And my cows that I am watching today are behind their own fence. And it occurred to me that those cows are as happy as can be. Wagging their tails and eating grass… in their own little cow heaven! And I thought about how freedom truly is what you make of it. Those cows could be hanging out at the edge of the fence waiting for their opportunity to escape. Just like I could have been waiting at the edge of my “fence” waiting for my opportunity to go home.
But instead, I chose to embrace my time and use it for God’s glory. Just like these cows are basking in God’s glory right now. No literally… they are basking in God’s sun light… taking a swim in the pond! Free as can be!
Freedom is right where you are if you allow God to take over your heart.
2 Cor. 3:17 says “Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.”
That means right in your circumstances. Right in your heartache. Right in your chaos of life. If you are looking to God, freedom is yours!
I’m telling my testimony to the girls at the prison in 2 weeks. I am starting out with this scripture and we are singing “Freedom Reigns” to kick off my testimony. If there was one thing I could impart to these ladies it would be to find freedom right where they are.
That’s my message out here as well. A lot of people are locked up in their own prison of their own making. And until Jesus is allowed to bring that freedom in their lives, they might never experience true freedom!
“The Lord sets the prisoners free.” – Psalm 146:7
This verse isn’t just for the inmates. It is for each one of us when we allow the prisons of fear, selfishness, pride or whatever else it is that traps us to consume us and take our freedom away. We need to release these things to Jesus and receive freedom and grace!
