I am finally getting the chance to sit down and write! Everything has just been happening all around me and there is never any time for ANYTHING!! But I have had the most amazing first freedom week ever! It has been a week full of parties and worship! Good friends and time with family. Lots of firsts… like slumber parties at Shauna’s. And not having to call anyone to tell them when I am changing locations. I had my first restaurant lunch after church. And my first SURPRISE PARTY!! Actually make that TWO SURPRISE PARTIES!!!
See, I’ve never had a surprise party in my life. And I have kinda been hinting at it for years that I wanted one. But when the time actually came, I only hinted at it in joking… didn’t really expect it to happen. I think I was even inviting people to the surprise party.
So when it did happen, I was accidently informed of it. I promise I wasn’t trying to find out. I truly thought I was just staying the night at Shauna’s for my first slumber party. But surprises always leak out somehow, so I kinda knew it was happening a few days before… but the fact that I knew made it even better because now they had to come up with something to throw me off.
So it started at work when I got a little poem in my email. It said:
“Your FREEDOM day is finally here,
You were not forgotten, have no fear.
You bugged and bugged for a party of sorts,
“What do I wear? A dress, jeans, maybe shorts???”
We tried to be sneaky, but you just wouldn’t allow…
To plan a surprise that would make you say “Wow!”
You don’t know the plans unless mom told you…
Because we all know she can’t keep a secret at all. (That didn’t rhyme)
I’m not telling you any secrets either,
But I have to give you and address – so be there!”
So I went to the address I was given, and it was a bird supply store. My first thought was “I am free as a bird!!!” So I went in and was expecting people to jump out anytime… but I looked around and realized there was nowhere to hide and they might not be here. So I went to the cashier and she had a card for me. It had another rhyme:
“Once you were a jail bird, but that was the past.
Now you are a free bird! Free! Free at last!”
Then I was instructed to go down a few suites to the Nail Spa where my best childhood friend Margaret met me for pedicures! It was so great! Spending time with my only friend I’ve known for 30 years was truly amazing! My only friendship that has withstood all this time… all this mess. You know you have a friend when she is there from the beginning… stands by me through the tough times… and is waiting on the other side!
After a little pampering, we headed over to Shauna’s house to find the next surprise… and sure enough… everyone jumped out and yelled… HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! Oh wait… it wasn’t my birthday… but I sure felt like it was! It was so neat! I felt so loved by all the new and old friends that are in my life! It is amazing to know that I have good people surrounding me.
And then I had my first slumber party at Shauna’s that night! It was all that I had hoped it would be! But they weren’t finished yet…
Stay tuned for part 2…
