Something I have noticed about most of the guys I am surrounded by is that they are full of empty promises. One guy told me for 3 weeks that he was getting me a book. Every time I saw him, he told me it was on its way. It was all we really had to talk about.
Another guy told me he was buying me a pair of jeans, and every time I see him, he yells out my size to remind me he’s getting these jeans. I want to yell back, “Quit talking about it…either do it or shut up about it.”
This takes me back to the relationships I got myself into that were full of empty promises. It was always “We’re gonna do this…or I’m gonna do this for you,” but it never happened, and at the time the promise is being made, I would do whatever he wanted cause I was looking forward to what was promised. Then when he never came through, I felt forgotten, unloved and unwanted.
This is why the Bible repeatedly says not to put your trust in man. And I don’t just mean men here, women do this too. I have made many promises I didn’t follow through with. But there is ONE Who NEVER breaks His promises.
“For ALL the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us.” 2 Corinthians 1:20
Every Word spoken of God is ours to claim. I think that sometimes we get stuck and don’t believe that God will come through cause we have been let down so many by people. But God will ALWAYS come through.
“…not one thing has failed of ALL the good things which the LORD your God spoke concerning you. All have come to pass for you; not one word of them has failed.” Joshua 23:14.
Joshua repeated “not one thing has failed.” This is important, not even ONE promise is empty.
That is why our trust and our hope should always be in the Lord and not man. We are human. We will always say things that don’t come to pass. But I want to be more careful of this. I don’t want to make promises or plans I don’t intend to follow through with.
“Let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ be ‘no’: anything more than this comes from the evil one.” Matthew 5:37
It’s as simple as this: Say what you mean and mean what you say. There is no need for idle talk or empty promises, and if you are ever feeling let down by someone else’s empty promises, remember that we have a promise from One Who is faithful, and “This is the promise that He has promised us, even Eternal Life.” 1 John 2:25
We have an eternal, incorruptible inheritance waiting for us, and that is a promise to look forward to that will not let us down.
