I started cleaning out my locker this week. I needed to throw away some papers and letters. And I wanted to pack up all my RDAP journals and put them at the back of the locker.. out of the way!
And this has me thinking about how often I clean out my house – my life – my temple that I live in.
“Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit lives in you? IF anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him; for God’s temple is sacred, and you are that temple.” (1 Cor. 3:16-17)
How many times is there a sin that I “push to the back of my locker?” Hide it so no one can see it – and I sometimes even forget it is there. Until that rainy day that I pull it back out and once again clutter my life with it.
Instead of asking God to remove it completely from me, I tuck away this pride, this envy, this gossip, cause I know I will need it one day to make me feel better.
Shame on me! I don’t need sin to make me feel better! I need God! This is why I must daily pray, “Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts, see if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” (Psalm 139:23-24)
We have to clean out our life daily and not stuff things in corners or in closets.
Remember the story of when Rachel stole her fathers idols and hid them underneath her on the camel? What on earth did she want to keep those idols for? The Bible never says why she wanted them. Perhaps because she wasn’t cleansed from her pagan background yet. She wanted to hold on to the past.
But God says, “I will sprinkle clean water on you and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your idols. I will give you a new heart and put a new Spirit in you.” (Ez. 35:25-26)
We can let God clean us out for real! Just like one day I will clean out my locker for real and pack it up and head home! God also will one day clean out our earthy temples for real and we will head home to live with Him for eternity! Until then, we must daily crucify our flesh and let Him cleanse us of our sins. And praise Jesus that by His blood this is all possible!
