Love, Worship and Obey

March 31, 2012

Genesis 22:1-19

In this passage of scripture, the words “love, worship and obey” are used for the first time in the Bible. They are used in this particular order. I think they are used in this order because first, you fall in love with God. Then you desire to worship Him. Then out of your love for Him, you want to obey Him.

This takes me back to county where I knew I loved the Lord. And I loved to remember songs that I grew up with. But it wasn’t genuine worship yet. I still had a lot of sin in my life. I had a girlfriend and a horrible mouth. It was only half-hearted worship. And I sure wasn’t ready to obey Him yet. I didn’t know what 1 John 5:3 meant by “If you love me you will obey my commands.”

But as my love deepened for Him, my worship did too. As I broke free from the addictions and bad habits, I desired to obey Him out of love. And as my love grew, it became less of a duty to be obedient and more of an honor.

I think that it is fitting that these 3 words are mentioned for the first time in the same story that God is named Jehovah-Jireh – the Lord Will Provide.

He does provide us with everything we need. And all He wants is our love, our worship and our obedience.

Are you wiling to trust God when He asks you to sacrifice something you love? Are you willing to be obedient, knowing that He will provide? It’s a huge step. But it’s a step worth taking.
